Art-related therapies take center stage at our recent conference.
Connecting the worlds of science and art has long been a passion of Dr. Jeremy Nobel, Harvard School of Public Health Professor and Founding President of the Foundation for Art and Healing. Carrier Clinic®, a mental health and rehab center in NJ, held a recent conference on The Healing Science of Art, where Dr. Nobel affirmed, “creative expression helps prepare us to deal with challenges and solve problems.”
Whether music, visual art, poetry, cooking, dancing or any other form of creative expression, Dr. Nobel pointed to creation as a means to self-discovery. At the same time, the art produced enables a sharing of emotions and perspectives with others, and a chance to learn about the people around us through their creative expression.
The American Art Therapy Association (AATA) and the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) include the following in their long list of art therapy benefits:
- Reduced anxiety
- Improved social skills
- Emotional exploration
- Increased dopamine release (a “feel good” brain chemical)
- Enhanced memory
- Reduced pain
- …and so much more
The result can be improved physical, mental and social health. Examples of the healing value of the arts can be found all over the Carrier Clinic® campus, including our Windows of the Future project (pictured above), in which reclaimed 100-year-old windows from our original buildings are painted with beautiful scenes for use as uplifting artwork in our new facilities.
