Identifying Mood Swing Triggers

Mood swings seem to come out of nowhere, but they are not abnormal. Everyone experiences mood changes.

A mood swing is an obvious change in one’s emotional state (from being happy to sad…or from social to lonely). Sudden and frequent changes, though, can take a toll on one’s daily functioning.

Relationships, employment, and financial complications may be affected even before you are able to recognize the occurrence of mood swings. Tracking changes in your behavior may prevent you and your loved ones from falling apart.

Follow these 5 easy steps to monitor and assess your behavior:

  1. Record daily activities, as well as changes, in a journal.
  2. Note how many hours of sleep you get and your eating habits.
  3. Indicate any changes in your relationships and social life.
  4. Track any medication intake.
  5. Log any changes in work performance and concentration.

Once you identify the triggers, take action to manage your mood. Improve your nutrition, get more sleep, and exercise regularly. Visit a doctor for advanced treatment, and bring your detective work from your journal. Treatment could range from psychotherapy to prescription medication.
